Daniil Medvedev has been playing some of his best tennis at the 2022 Vienna Open, but he's also experiencing some unusual moments on the court.
The Russian already secured his spot at the 2022 ATP Finals, and in Vienna and Paris, he will try to collect some additional points that could help him regain the World No. 1 spot in the ATP Rankings, which he held earlier this season.
However while doing so, in Austria, Medvedev experienced quite unusual moments. First, he was booed after winning a match against the home crowd favorite Dominic Thiem.
Then, Medvedev dominated in his match against Jannik Sinner before making a hilarious mistake. He thought that the ball that left his racket was too long, so he shouted "No!" during the rally.
However, it eventually landed inside of the lines, and his opponent returned it to the other side of the net. Despite Medvedev still catching the ball, the rally couldn't continue as the umpire called a hindrance: "Hindrance. Mr. Medvedev spoke during the point, so he loses the point."
That meant Sinner was automatically awarded the point. Medvedev didn't challenge this decision as he was probably aware of his mistake and also enjoyed a massive lead as he was up 6-4, 5-2, 30-0 before the incident.
He eventually won the match in two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Following his win, the Russian player was happy about the level that he was able to produce.
"I’m really happy, I have been looking for this level for a long, long time. It’s the level where I can win the biggest tournaments on Tour and I hope I can bring it to two more matches."
The Russian then also defeated Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-finals of the tournament to secure a final spot, and after his semifinal match, he was mostly delighted by his consistency.
"There were a few moments in the match where I thought I should have done just a little bit better, to go in front earlier and try to build the pressure earlier."
"Then I managed to stay consistent and, in the most important points, managed to raise my level. That was enough today, and I’m really happy with my level."
