Carlos Alcaraz lost in the semi-finals of the 2022 Swiss Indoors in Basel to an inspired Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Auger-Aliassime has been, without a doubt, one of the best players in recent months. Thanks to that, he how chases a spot at the 2022 ATP Finals in Turin.
Before facing Alcaraz at the 2022 Swiss Indoors in Basel, the young Canadian won 11 consecutive matches as he lifted trophies in Florence and Antwerp.
In Switzerland, Auger-Aliassime wanted to improve his chances of qualification while his opponent was looking to win his first title since becoming world no. 1 in the ATP Rankings.
Previously, the two youngsters met twice. First, the Spaniard was forced to retire at last year's US Open, and then, they met at this year's Davis Cup. At that event, Auger-Aliassime became the first person to defeat Alcaraz since he became the World No. 1 player.
It was obvious that he wanted to add another win in Basel since the start of the match. Auger-Aliassime was the first player to have break points, but his opponent didn't let him break away.
However, when the scoreboard showed 3-3 in the first set, the Canadian started a one-man show. He won 12 out of 13 rallies played and comfortably took the first set by winning it 6-3.
In the second set, it was an even more dominant performance by Auger-Aliassime. He broke his opponent twice and after Alcaraz didn't use his only break point in the last game of the match, the Canadian won 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 22 minutes.
He will meet Holger Rune or Roberto Bautista Agut in the final. With this win, Auger-Aliassime's qualification chances for the 2022 ATP Finals rapidly increased. He currently sits in the last qualifying spot and has more than a 500-point lead over next Taylor Fritz.
