Despite showing a very high level so far this week, Iga Swiatek produced a very weak one against Jessica Pegula, losing in three sets at the 2023 Canadian Open in Montreal.

This was probably the worst match Swiatek played in a very long time as Pegula made her look more like 50th than 1st player on the WTA Tour. The American played a pretty balanced match from her side doing enough to help Swiatek beat herself essentially.

And in many ways, it was a self-inflicted loss because the Polsih player had huge problems on her serve, pretty much unlike anything we've seen in a very long time. She was pretty good on return putting a lot of pressure on Pegula and breaking her multiple times but keeping her serve was seemingly impossible.

Players traded blows from the baseline in most rallies and we saw pure brilliance at times but Swiatek was missing a lot. Like genuinely a lot. Pegula missed as well but not as much as Swiatek and that was crucial. It wasn't this spectacular level but mostly just a barrage of misses from the Polish side.

The first set was 6-2 for Pegula who already snapped a winning streak this week when she defeated Coco Gauff in the previous round. By winning this match Pegula snapped another winning streak though she had to work really hard for this one.

The final score was 6-2 6-7(4) 6-4 for Pegula who was broken eight times in this match. So how exactly did she win? Well by breaking Swiatek an incredible 11 times. That might just be the most breaks the number one ever endured in her career.

A sensational win for Pegula especially after falling behind 2-4 in the final set. The Polish number one largely beat herself which was quite evident by the easy miss on match point. In any case, Pegula moves on to the final.
