Carlos Alcaraz released a statement after announcing his withdrawal from the 2025 Canadian Open in Toronto.
The ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto lost some of the biggest names in tennis. Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Jack Draper, and Alcaraz will all miss the tournament in Canada.
While the withdrawals of Sinner, Djokovic, and Draper were made official already on Sunday, Alcaraz's withdrawal was reported only by the Spanish media, but it came from very credible sources.
However, the 22-year-old's withdrawal was not officially confirmed by him or the tournament, even though it seemed that the decision was already made, especially after a video was posted online that showed Alcaraz talking about his plans, which mentioned travelling directly to the United States from Europe.
Now, the five-time Grand Slam champion confirmed his withdrawal from the 2025 Canadian Open, also providing an explanation for his decision not to play an ATP Masters 1000 event.
Alcaraz has enjoyed a few successful months on the ATP Tour, winning matches left and right. That meant he had played a lot of tennis recently. His last match came at the Wimbledon Championships, where he lost to Sinner in the final.
The fatigue from the packed schedule was the reason why Alcaraz chose to withdraw from the tournament in Canada. The event starts only two weeks after the conclusion of Wimbledon, which is why he wasn't the only one withdrawing.
"After many consecutive weeks of competition without rest, I will not be able to play in Toronto this year. I have small muscle issues, and I need to recover physically and mentally for what comes next. To the tournament and to my fans in Canada, I am very sorry, I will see you next year!"
On top of that, the Canadian Open has been, statistically, the worst tournament of Alcaraz's career. He has played in Canada only twice, as he missed last year's edition as well, but never made it past the quarter-finals.
In total, the young Spaniard has played four matches in Canada, and he has managed to win only two. On his debut in 2022, he lost in his first match to Tommy Paul, and in 2023, Alcaraz lost to Paul again, this time after beating Ben Shelton and Hubert Hurkacz in the previous rounds.
This withdrawal means that, like Sinner and Djokovic, Alcaraz will now focus on the Cincinnati Open and the US Open. He has a trophy from one of these tournaments, winning the New York Slam in 2022. He played in the Cincinnati Open final in 2023, but lost to Djokovic.
The withdrawal also means that Alcaraz won't have a chance to overtake Sinner in the ATP Rankings anytime soon. However, he still leads the 2025 ATP Race with a 1,540-point lead over his Italian rival.
