Qinwen Zheng's 2025 season had to be stopped after she was forced to undergo a surgery.
Zheng has been one of the breakthrough players in recent years. She is now a stable Top 10 player, but there's a big chance that will change in the upcoming weeks, as the Chinese player won't compete in any of the upcoming
WTA 1000 tournaments in North America. She will also miss the 2025
US Open.
The 22-year-old's 2025 season has been a mix of consistent results and surprising early losses. She exited the Wimbledon Championships already in the first round, and maybe that was what sparked her decision to undergo surgery.
Of course, as one of the top contenders for the title, Zheng likely planned to spend two weeks in London, but with her schedule cleared up, it presented her with a chance to undergo a needed surgery.
The Chinese player announced her decision to undergo surgery on her Instagram profile, explaining that she had been dealing with pain in her right elbow, which is why she chose to go under the knife.
"I want to share a quick update with you all. Over the past months, I’ve been dealing with persistent pain in my right elbow during training and matches. Despite trying various treatments to manage it, the discomfort never fully went away."
"After consulting with elbow specialists and discussing thoroughly with my team, we decided that arthroscopic surgery was the best option to fully resolve the issue. Yesterday, I underwent the procedure successfully, and I’m grateful to have it behind me. Now begins the recovery journey."
In her statement, Zheng explained that she would now focus on the recovery, but she won't recover in time to make it to the last Grand Slam tournament of the season in New York.
"Over the next few weeks and months, I’ll be focusing entirely on rehab, doing everything I can to come back stronger and healthier. This is just a short break, and I see it as a necessary step toward a better version of myself on court. Thank you all for your continued support and encouragement. I can’t wait to be back. See you soon!"
Zheng withdrew from the 2025 US Open more than a month before it starts on August 24th. That means her recovery will take at least four weeks, and it remains to be seen whether she will still appear on the courts this year.
The last part of the season is held in Asia, and this year's Billie Jean King Cup Finals are played in Zheng's home country as well. As of now,
she appears on the entry list, showing intent to recover in time for the team competition.
