Iga Swiatek has a pretty big match coming up at the 2023 WTA Finals, and she's looking forward to playing it against rival Aryna Sabalenka.
They've had some nice battles over the years, but this one might be the biggest one they will play. It's the semi-finals of the WTA Finals, which means that the winner will contest the trophy.
It's the same situation we had at last year's WTA Finals, where they also played in the semi-finals. Sabalenka won that match in three sets, so Swiatek is certainly motivated to avoid that.
A win also allows her to reclaim the number one rank before the year expires, which would be rather significant for her. Before the match, Swiatek underlined her usual preparation - focusing on herself and doing her best.
I’ll see what the conditions are gonna be like. Against Aryna, it’s never easy. I’m just gonna do my best & focus on myself & what I wanna do on court. We usually have these matches that are exciting & really tough, both mentally & physically. I’m just gonna be ready & see what the wind is gonna look like & what’s gonna happen on court.
It's been a challenging year for Swiatek so far because she had to endure some painful losses this year on top of just not playing as well as last year. It gave her a new perspective and taught how to deal with it. Those lessons learned should help her in the upcoming battle against Sabalenka.
… This time I will use my experience of being in the WTA Finals. Last year when I got out of my group, it felt like I was almost at the end of the tournament & I felt really proud of myself that I just got out of the group. This year it feels like now it’s kind of starting. So it’s a bit different & I for sure learned my lesson.
