Sofia Kenin won one grand slam and played in the final of another however injuries have derailed her career quite a bit.
She's not playing at that level nor is she close to getting there but by embracing the small goals she set for herself. It's the only way you can keep yourself going without getting demoralised and there has been a bit of that with Kenin.
She had several setbacks with injuries and then her play hasn't been good when she returned. This comeback attempt is looking more promising with some wins on clay in recent weeks as well. She even avoided a 0-6 0-6 loss in Rome that she had a few years ago.
Of course I expect a lot of myself. It's not easy being No.4 and now not ranked where I want to be. But I'm making progress. Before Madrid, I played well. We had some great practices and then I played bad. Here I ended up not having the best practices and I played well. I would rather keep it like that.
Returning from injury was really tough for Kenin which is why she's treasuring these moments of simply being able to play tennis competitively. Being able to come back from the injury makes Kenin quite proud, especially after the amazing win over Sabalenka.
I'm proud of myself. I wasn't hot this whole year like she was, so I knew I had to do my best. I had a tough one at Indian Wells against Elena Rybakina. Two points and the first and second set could have gone my way. I was heartbroken but I got myself together. This does a lot for my confidence.
If you think about small goals, it's positive. If you don't see it that way, what's the point of playing? Last year when I came back I thought, like, I gotta get back and of course that was more pressure. Complete disaster in my game and everything. My head was completely out of it.
