Iga Swiatek served another double bagel at the Italian Open after beating Karolina Pliskova 6-0 6-0 in the 2021 final.
The Polish player started off her Italian Open title defence with an impressive beatdown of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. She didn't lose a set, or a game, saving the only break point she allowed in the whole 12 games.
It was another double bagel, something she already did in Rome once. It was a final no less but it's something she actively tries to do. It doesn't matter if it's 6-0 or some other score because winning is what matters. That desire to win and the competitive spirit don't allow her to relax even when she's up big in a match.
I mean, even if I would, I don't want to lose points on purpose. It doesn't make sense. So I'm always going to be that kind of player who wants to win the next point. I think most of us have that kind of feeling, so yeah. In my opinion, like, the score doesn't really matter and it doesn't have any influence on my - I don't know - feeling on the court. I'm just trying to play the best tennis no matter what the score is.
Speaking about bagels, Swiatek, who will get a chance to compete in the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Finals after her country received a wild card, couldn't remember whether she's ever lost a set 6-0 though she's certain that it probably happened in the juniors. Though not on the WTA, she did play matches where she was beaten handily and those are the ones she remembers well.
Well, I don't know if I lost 6-0, 6-0. Probably yes. Probably like when I was younger and I played against, like, older players. On WTA, I'm not sure. For sure I had matches that were, like, really one-way, especially when I started on WTA in 2019.
