Sofia Kenin among names awarded wildcard for Doha

The 2023 Qatar Open, WTA 500 event in Doha, has unveiled its list of players to receive a wildcard for this year's tournament.

Among those names is former Australian Open champion, Sofia Kenin. The American has struggled with fitness and form since her stunning breakthrough in Melbourne three years ago.

Tournament organisers for the Qatar Open still deem her worthy of a place in the tournament, however, as she continues to work hard to rediscover the form that led to her Grand Slam triumph. Also on the list are Maria Sakkari, two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka and Turkish player Ipek Oz.

Sakkari holds a ranking high enough to be able to qualify directly for the draw, but she did not apply for entry so was not on the official entry list. Doha tournament organisers are no doubt hoping that the wildcard will entice the Greek No. 1 to travel to the Middle East later this month.

Sakkari is currently playing at the Linz Open in Austria, where she is due to face Donna Vekic of Croatia in the last eight this evening.

The tournament starts on Monday 13th February and will run until Saturday 18th.
