Family tension involving Alejandro Tabilo unexpectedly burst into the public domain when his father launched an extraordinary attack on him.
Last month, Tabilo generated headlines for the right reasons when he defeated Novak Djokovic at the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters. That was the Chilean's second consecutive win against the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Unfortunately, Tabilo has not played a match since losing to Grigor Dimitrov in the next round in Monte-Carlo. He is currently sidelined with a bone edema in his left wrist, a severe injury that could rule him out of the upcoming 2025 French Open at Roland Garros.
However, Ricardo Tabilo, the ATP star's father, was in no mood to be sympathetic. It was Mother's Day in several countries worldwide on Sunday, and the Chilean Tennis Federation posted a picture on Facebook of Alejandro with his mother, Maria.
Ricardo responded brutally to the post by claiming that Alejandro has forgotten about his mother since getting together with his girlfriend, an incredible thing to write publicly for millions of people to see.
"Congratulations to all the mothers, and I'd like to thank tenischile for the greeting with that souvenir photo, since Alejandro forgot about his mother when he bought his girlfriend at a VIP club in the eastern part of the capital."
Unsurprisingly, Alejandro was seething after learning of his father's Facebook post. In a short but cutting response to Ricardo, the 2024 Chile Open champion accused him of being a liar and a coward.
"Ricardo Tabilo, how good it is to continue writing lies in such a cowardly manner. Now you remember you have a beautiful wife..."
The drama had one final twist when Alejandro's brother, Sebastian, also slammed the tennis player. He referenced Coco Gauff's former coach Brad Gilbert once saying that Alejandro was very talented when writing that Gilbert never mentioned his brother's ego.
"What the Mr. Gilbert didn't tell us is that ego would eat him up."
Rumors have circulated in the past about Tabilo being estranged from his family. The drama on Facebook clearly shows that relations are strained, and it could be challenging to repair them from their current point.
Tabilo already has trying to recover from his injury to focus on. Handling family drama in public is not going to make him feel any better, especially when he said Ricardo's claim about him forgetting Maria was untrue.
That was not the only heated incident in recent days. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Arthur Fils had a fiery exchange at the net after the Frenchman recovered from losing the first set to overcome the 2021 French Open runner-up.
During the second set, Tsitsipas hit a ball at Fils' body when his younger opponent closed the next. The Greek No. 1 apologized for doing that, but it was not seen by Fils, who seemed to become more fired up after that moment.
Unlike Tabilo's dilemma, there seems to be no lasting animosity between the Fils and Tsitsipas. The former said afterward that he knows hitting at an opponent's body when they are at the net is part of the sport.
