Bianca Andreescu returned to tennis after taking a 6-month break last year and she is going better than she expected.
Since she won the US Open, Andreescu's outlook has changed significantly as a result of injuries and mental fatigue that have slowed down her career. She returned this year after a 6-month break hoping to gradually regain her level and fitness.
She did better than that in both regards playing one final and posting a 17-10 record so far:
"I think I'm doing better than I expected. I try not to have any expectations going into this season but it's definitely better than I thought" explained Andreescu. Taking so much time off, you never know what you're going to do."
It's a continuation of her mindset that values the end goal more so than short-term goals: "For me, this is the bigger picture kind of thinking that I'm doing with my coach. So it's not short term, it's more long term. It's way less pressure."
Her latest match came after she took some time off after the US Open. It was a match against Samsonova, a player who lost only once in her previous 20 matches and Andreescu won it in three sets:
"The match was very tight and it could have gone either way. I felt towards the end I felt I was putting a little bit more pressure that she was and I was a little bit more consistent."
