Weeks ago, Australian papers reported that Djokovic would be permitted to play at the 2023 Australian Open under the new government.

Since he last competed there, Australia had elected a new administration, one that disagreed with his deportation from the nation a year ago. Due to the change, Djokovic's chances of competing at the Australian Open have improved, and local media in Australia is now reporting that he will reapply for a visa in order to compete at the 2023 tournament.

Shadow Immigration Dan Tehan told the media that it's important to uphold the ban: “As a tennis lover, I’d love to see him there… But the most important thing here is that we protect the integrity of our immigration system. The rules about coming into Australia have changed, you don't have to be vaccinated anymore."

"If they decide that he can come, they’ve got to do so in making that decision in a way to protect the integrity of our immigration system. It was the right decision because there were requirements that needed to be met for him to enter the country" Tehan added.

Tennis Australia director Craig Tiley confirmed that Djokovic is eager to return: “I do know he’d like to return to the AO- He’s the nine-time champion and of course we always want the best players in the world to compete. It’s a matter between him and the relevant federal authorities.”
