Iga Swiatek vs Jessica Pegula: 2023 Canadian Open Montreal - Preview & Prediction

by Evita Mueller

Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula had some big matches this year, and they face each other in another big one at the 2023 Canadian Open in Montreal.

Swiatek overcame a very inspired effort from Danielle Collins to defeat her in three sets and move on to the semi-finals. Pegula did the same against Coco Gauff so we'll see them battle each other for the 8th time overall on the WTA Tour.

Swiatek generally had more success than Pegula but this is a matchup the American can win. In fact, she smashed the Polish player earlier this year at the United Cup. Revenge came in the Doha final as the reigning number one won 6-3 6-0.

Generally speaking, Swiatek has all the tools needed to beat Pegula as she has superb movement which allows her to stay in rallies for a long time. She has the hitting ability to absorb the power of Pegula and turn it against her which combined with her movement does the trick most of the time.

Head-to-head:

They played seven matches so far and it's 5-2 for Swiatek. Two matches this year and it's 1-1 though the bigger match was won by Swiatek. Both of Pegula's wins came on hard courts where the overall score is 4-2 for the reining number one.

Prediction:

So what exactly will happen in this one? Well, it's rather simple. Either Swiatek completely dominates her opponent from the baseline or Pegula finds a way to outhit her opponent. I could see both happen but the former is far more likely to actually happen.

She's just been very impressive so far and I'm far more inclined to trust her in a big spot as opposed to Pegula. The American was excellent against Gauff but can she do it two matches in a row? I don't see it.

Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in two sets.
