The 2025 Wimbledon Championships have lost yet another high-profile ATP player after Hubert Hurkacz withdrew from the tournament.
Hurkacz possesses one of the most dangerous grass-court games in the world. He showed that with a run to the semifinal in 2021, which was ended by the in-form Matteo Berrettini, who played terrifically to defeat him.
The Pole could have beaten Novak Djokovic in the fourth round of the 2023 edition. He had chances to win the opening two sets before losing them both 6-8 on tiebreaks. Hurkacz ultimately fell 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, 4-6.
Unfortunately, last year's tournament ended painfully for Hurkacz. The 28-year-old retired in the second round against Arthur Fils after tearing his right meniscus, a piece of fibrocartilage in the knee joint.
That issue required surgery, and he was initially expected to be out for several months. Although Hurkacz returned much sooner than most thought possible at the 2024 Canadian Open, he has suffered some setbacks since.
Another flare-up related to his surgery is why Hurkcz withdrew from Wimbledon. The two-time Masters 1000 champion revealed the sad news in a statement, admitting he had to listen to his body despite how tough the decision was.
"Over the past few weeks, you’ve seen me on court through both the highs and the more challenging moments. Unfortunately, today I have to share some difficult news.  After careful consideration and consultation with my team, we have made the decision to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon."
"During my preparations, my body reacted with irritation of the synovial membrane. This is a part of the ongoing recovery process following my recent surgery and requires rest and appropriate treatment. It is not easy to step away from such a prestigious tournament. But I know this is the right decision for my long-term health and performance."
Hurkacz is one of several notable players who will not play at this year's Wimbledon. A few days ago, Casper Ruud withdrew from the season's third Grand Slam after not recovering in time from a knee injury sustained at Roland Garros.
Ruud has not hidden how uncomfortable he is playing on grass, which is demonstrated by the three-time Grand Slam runner-up never progressing past the second round of Wimbledon. Nonetheless, missing one of the four majors is disappointing for any player.
2022 Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios will not make his first appearance at SW19 since reaching the final after suffering a setback in his recovery from injury. He also withdrew from all the events leading up to Wimbledon.
Kyrgios returned this season after only playing one match in 2023 and 2024 because of long-term wrist and knee injuries. The Australian's wrist has suffered repeated wrist pain since making a comeback, and his future in singles looks uncertain.
Kei Nishikori is another man who sustained a setback after working hard to return from a long-term injury. The news of his withdrawal from Wimbledon was overshadowed by Nishikori publicly admitting he cheated on his wife.
Sebastian Korda also withdrew. Two years ago, the American considered himself among the favorites for Wimbledon. Since then, he has lost twice in the opening round and now cannot play this year.
