The 2025 Wimbledon Championships lost another high-profile men's player after Casper Ruud withdrew from the season's third Grand Slam.
Ruud's last appearance was in the second round at Roland Garros a few weeks ago. He won the opening set against Nuno Borges, but then struggled with a knee injury throughout the rest of the match.
Although the two-time runner-up in Paris did not retire from the contest, he could not compete properly and swiftly lost the last two sets 1-6, 0-6 to crash out of his most successful Grand Slam in the second round.
Ruud was scheduled to play at the 2025 Mallorca Championships, which began on Sunday. Two days earlier, the Norwegian posted on social media confirming that he could not play in Spain because of his knee issue.
Despite pulling out of the event in Mallorca, Ruud was positive at that stage about his progress with the injury and hoped that continued work would be good enough to be fit for Wimbledon.
Unfortunately, Ruud's off-court efforts have not proved enough to make him fit for Wimbledon. He will miss the chance to improve on his past efforts at SW19 after withdrawing from the sport's premier grass-court event.
Wimbledon has not been a happy hunting ground for Ruud since the start of his professional career. The 2022 ATP Finals runner-up is yet to get past the second round, falling at that stage in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Ruud does not hide that he much prefers playing on clay and hard courts to grass. He is not comfortable with the low bounce and the different style of movement needed to succeed on the surface.
Although it would be entirely unfair to suggest Ruud fabricated the injury to avoid playing at SW19, it is possible that he is more cautious about playing with a physical issue at Wimbledon than he would at other Grand Slams.
Ruud is scheduled to play at the 2025 Gstaad Open on his favored clay during the week after Wimbledon. Despite being an ATP 250, the former world No. 2 probably feels he has a better chance of getting more ranking points there than at the grass-court Grand Slam.
The 26-year-old is a former champion in Gstaad, which earned him 250 points. To exceed that total, he would have needed to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, which did not seem likely given his past record at the event.
Ruud is one of many men's players who withdrew from Wimbledon. Nick Kyrgios announced a few weeks ago that he would miss the entire grass-court swing after enduring a setback in his recovery from an injury.
Kyrgios, the 2022 runner-up at SW19, used to be one of the most dangerous grass-court players in the world. However, his repeated injury issues in the last few years have made some question why he has not retired from singles.
Sebastian Korda was another high-profile player who withdrew. Two years ago, the American declared himself one of the favorites to win Wimbledon. He has not won a main draw at the tournament since.
