The scars of Jannik Sinner's heartbreaking defeat in the 2025 Roland Garros final to Carlos Alcaraz were still apparent when he spoke after losing at the 2025 Halle Open.
Carlos Alcaraz's scarcely believable comeback at Roland Garros against Sinner will undoubtedly be talked about for decades to come. The Italian was 5-3, 40-0 up in the fourth set, but ultimately lost in a deciding set tiebreak.
Despite enduring the toughest moment of his career, Sinner resisted any temptation to pull out of the Halle Open. He started his campaign in Germany with a win against the home favorite Yannick Hanfmann.
Alexander Bublik produced an outstanding performance to overcome Sinner in the round of 16. The Kazakhstani, who was comprehensively beaten by the ATP world No. 1 in the Roland Garros quarterfinal a few weeks ago, triumphed 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Speaking to Sky Italia, Sinner did not seem too disappointed. He acknowledged that playing so soon after the Roland Garros final loss was challenging, showing it played on his mind.
"I have to accept what happened. I'm now going to have a few days' rest before Wimbledon, which is going to do me good. Honestly, a little break is going to do me good. I came here (to Halle), I gave it my all after the Roland Garros defeat, it wasn't easy."
The lingering effect of that brutal setback in Paris against Alcaraz was further evidenced by Sinner revealing the time between now and Wimbledon would partially be used to improve mentally and be in the right place for the season's third Grand Slam.
"Despite everything, I'm happy enough. I've played two matches before Wimbledon; if there'd been more, it would have been even better. Now, I've got to boost myself both mentally and physically, that takes a little time, but for Wimbledon, everything will be fine."
Although he had admitted to having sleepless nights after Roland Garros, Sinner initially seemed in a good place in Halle and talked with impressive perspective about taking the positives from being one point away from winning a Grand Slam on a surface he used to struggle on.
Only after exiting the Halle Open did Sinner reveal that losing the Roland Garros final so heartbreakingly made it challenging for him to compete at all just over a week later. He deserves credit for doing that, despite exiting early.
Sinner's inability to defend the Halle title he won last year means the gap between him and Carlos Alcaraz in the rankings has narrowed even further. If the Spaniard manages to secure a second Queen's Club Championships title, he would be 1,130 points behind Sinner at No. 1.
However, Alcaraz cannot overtake Sinner after the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. The two-time defending champion at SW19 will defend 2,000 ranking points at the iconic tournament, giving the Italian a chance to extend his lead at the top.
For now, Sinner will enjoy a break to refresh before Wimbledon. This year's Australian Open champion often skis to relax, recently admitting he enjoys that even more than playing tennis.
