Casper Ruud is guaranteed to play in no grass-court tournaments before the 2025 Wimbledon Championships after withdrawing from the 2025
Mallorca Championships.
The three-time Grand Slam runner-up has never hidden that he does not like playing on grass as much as clay or hard courts. The Norwegian infamously joked about grass being for golf instead of tennis.
Those comments and poor results on the surface(by his high standards) mean Ruud not playing at any grass-court tournaments would not be wholly surprising, but he intended to participate in this year's Mallorca Championships.
A knee injury essentially ended Ruud's hopes of reaching a third Roland Garros final. Although he finished his second-round loss against Nuno Borges, Ruud could not play properly and was visibly hampered in the last two sets.
The 2022
ATP Finals runner-up provided an update in a video shared by the Mallorca Championships' social media pages. Ruud confirmed that he will not be able to attend the Spanish ATP 250 tournament.
Despite being back training and his knee feeling much better than a few weeks ago, Ruud stated it is not yet in a good enough place to play matches, and that he needed to withdraw from the Mallorca Championships for that reason.
"Hi guys, Casper here. Just a quick update from my side. I'm back on-court training, and the knee is feeling quite a lot better, but still, unfortunately, not good enough to compete yet. As some of you know, I entered for Mallorca next week, which I unfortunately have to withdraw from."
"I will keep training, keep pushing to be ready for Wimbledon. Mallorca will not be in reach for me. I'm really sorry for the people there, I love Mallorca, I love going there, so hopefully I can come back another time because I was really excited for it. I need to listen to the body, I will keep training, and hopefully, see you back on court soon."
Ruud's decision is sensible. It would be unwise to risk making the injury worse by competing at a tournament so close to Wimbledon, and he now has an extra week to be ready for the third Grand Slam of the year.
The 2022 US Open runner-up is scheduled to appear at the 2025 Gstaad Open the week after Wimbledon. Ruud's strong preference for playing on clay over grass might make him worried about missing a clay court tournament by featuring at Wimbledon with any lingering issues.
It would be a shame if Ruud joined the already lengthy list of players who will be absent from Wimbledon.
Nick Kyrgios announced that he would miss the entire grass-court swing after suffering an injury setback.
Sebastian Korda also withdrew from this year's Wimbledon, although the American did not provide a reason for doing so. The American had also pulled out of the 2025 Queen's Club Championships without an explanation.
Kei Nishikori will also be missing at SW19. The Japanese star has endured yet another injury after enjoying his longest run of tournaments without a physical ailment since 2021.
