Kei Nishikori has made headlines for the wrong reasons after revealing he was unfaithful to his wife of over four years.
The 2014 US Open runner-up has received much sympathy in recent years after enduring an injury nightmare. Due to physical issues, Nishikori was missing from the ATP Tour for almost two years until June 2023.
After facing more setbacks since returning from so long out, Nishikori enjoyed his longest run of tournaments without an injury since 2021 in the opening months of 2025. He showed much of the consistent tennis that made him so popular among fans in those few months.
The 35-year-old's injury-free period included reaching his first ATP final in nearly six years at the 2025 Hong Kong Open. Unfortunately, Nishikori is now on the sidelines again after sustaining an injury setback at last month's 2025 Geneva Open.
Getting Injured again after finally being fit for a few months is undoubtedly challenging for him to deal with. However, an even more stressful and personal situation has come to light for Nishikori.
The Japanese star released a statement, as per Bunshun, confirming that he cheated on his wife, Mai Yamauchi, with a 32-year-old model. The 12-time ATP titlist apologized for his actions and hopes to regain the trust of fans and those around him.
"I deeply apologise for causing discomfort to everyone who supports me; tennis fans, tennis associations, sponsors, and other related parties, and for their concern and inconvenience due to my dishonest behavior."
"In addition, I deeply regret that I made my wife, children, and each ‘parent’ feel hurt. From now on, in order to fulfill my life as a responsible member of society, I will solely focus on tennis competitions and produce results. We will do our best to regain your trust."
Since his burst onto the scene in the men's game, Nishikori has been one of the sport's quietest personalities. That makes his making headlines for dishonesty in his personal life even more surprising.
It is unknown whether Nishikori and his wife will remain together after his shocking revelation. The pledge to solely focus on tennis and not anything else might also have been a pledge to his wife in an effort to regain trust.
If Nishikori did get divorced, he would not be the first tennis player to have a public relationship end. At the start of 2025, Osaka announced that she and rapper Cordae had split after a five-year relationship.
Osaka has a daughter with Cordae. The parting was amicable, and the four-time Grand Slam champion lauded him as a great father and good person in her statement about the break-up.
Anastasia Potapova and Alexander Shevchenko's marriage ended after less than a year. Although they had moved quickly from being a couple to marriage, the pair ultimately realized that things were not working.
Media scrutiny must make many ATP and WTA stars hesitant about dating another tennis player. However, Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas seem very happy together and do not hide how much they love each other.
