Carlos Alcaraz will play with Emma Raducanu at the 2025 US Open, and he revealed how their mixed doubles partnership came to be.
The mixed doubles tournament at the 2025 US Open will be played in a completely new format. Shorter matches, more action, but most importantly, all the most exciting singles players in the draw.
Months ahead of the tournament, the US Open organizers released the initial entry list, with an incredible amount of exciting players signing up for the mixed doubles event.
Fans had a chance to see some of the duos on the court before. For example, the couple of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa have played together before, and the same applies to the 2023 US Open mixed doubles semi-finalists Ben Shelton and Taylor Townsend.
Novak Djokovic, for example, played with Olga Danilovic at the United Cup, and duos like Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina, and Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev, have previously joined forces in exhibitions.
But there are also some duos that fans never had a chance to see playing together before. For example, Jannik Sinner will play with Emma Navarro, Jack Draper will create a team with Qinwen Zheng, and probably the most exciting team will be formed by Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu teaming up.
The two joining forces created plenty of headlines, and after beating Adam Walton in the first round of the 2025 Queen's Club Championships, Alcaraz was asked about their upcoming partnership.
"She's gonna be the boss (smiling). Yeah, I mean, the US Open came to us and gave us opportunities to play mixed doubles. I'm super excited about it. I think it's going to be great. It was an amazing idea for the tournament."
"I've known Emma for a really long time, so we know each other. I have a really good relationship with her. So it's just gonna be interesting. You know, obviously both, we are gonna enjoy, for sure. I will try to put my doubles skill on it. We will try to win. But obviously it's going to be really, really fun."
Despite Alcaraz's impressive first-round win at the ATP 500 tournament at the Queen's Club, it was his partnership with the British No. 1 player on the WTA Tour that generated the most interest during his press conference.
After talking about their planned partnership, the 22-year-old Spaniard was asked another question. He was asked to explain who came up with the idea to play together. Alcaraz revealed that he was the one asking Raducanu to team up.
"I mean, the tournament told us about the tournament, the mixed tournament. I was thinking that I couldn't play better if it wasn't with Emma. I just asked Emma if she wants to play doubles with me. Yeah, I made that special request."
"She took a while (laughter). No, not that much, not that much. But obviously she had to ask, and she had to think a little bit. But it wasn't a minute, so..."
Although his partnership with Raducanu is undoubtedly interesting, Alcaraz will certainly want to focus on his tournament in London. After beating Walton in the first round, the former champion will now take on compatriot Jaume Munar.
Alcaraz could have played against Jordan Thompson, who is one of the best grass-court players on the ATP Tour, but the Australian injured himself during the first-round match.
Munar is a much better draw for the five-time Grand Slam champion, as he has won a total of four grass-court matches in his entire tennis career. One of those wins was Thompson's retirement, and the highest-ranked player Munar ever managed to beat on grass was Thiago Monteiro in 2022. The Brazilian was ranked 89th at the time.
