Iga Swiatek continued her Canadian Open Montreal run by overcoming a very strong Danielle Collins in three sets.
Danielle Collins made a return this week in Montreal, and it was a spectacular one in many ways. She showed off the full experience giving tennis fans plenty of amazing tennis and some personality too. Beating Iga Swiatek isn't something she's unfamiliar with, either.
They played at the Australian Open in the year Collins made the final and it was a proper smacking by the American. Swiatek was returning the favour early on in this one. A 3-0 lead to start and then a 5-1 lead as well.
Collins finally found her shots but couldn't do much to completely turn around the score. After sealing the opening set 6-3, Swiatek opened the second one with yet another break. The American had a lot of trouble outhitting her opponent, who was on every ball, due to her sensational movement.
The big problem for Collins was the inability to do much with her serve. It didn't create too much pressure on Swiatek who had no problems establishing herself in most rallies. Predictably, the Polish player did most of her damage on the second serve and that remained a constant throughout the match.
Collins played a good match overall but it was pretty clear that Swiatek had a higher level to go to while Collins really couldn't, at least not to the extent of Swiatek. Even so, the American found a way to take the second set which made things interesting for a while.
Swiatek didn't lose her cool and remained calm, continuing to play her game and once again exploiting the second serve of Collins. She took the break and then cruised from there. An 8th consecutive win for Swiatek, with the final score being 6-3 4-6 6-2 as she moves on to face Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals. The American bested Coco Gauff earlier today.
