It seems that the season of retirements continues for the 2021 US Open champion, Emma Raducanu as she was forced to retire from her opening match at the 2022 Nottingham Open.

Entering the 2022 Nottingham Open, Emma Raducanu was one of the biggest favourites to win the title alongside the first-seeded Maria Sakkari who praised her before the tournament. However, she is out of the tournament already in the first round after retiring against Viktorija Golubic.

Raducanu led already 3-1 in the first set and it seemed that she will enjoy a good start to the grass-court season. However, she lost the following three games before eventually retiring from the match.

It appeared that the injury might have been related to a side strain, but it is yet to be confirmed after the match. She was supposed to appear at a couple more grass-court tournaments this season but that now remains in question after yet another retirement.

Prior to the tournament, Raducanu also spoke about the decision she's yet to make about her coach, when she said: "I want to take my time with this decision. Nothing has changed. I still have the same people, good people, around me. I don't want to rush into anything."

"Personally, I think I know what I'm doing. I'm trusting what I'm doing and the work I'm doing. I'm still 19 and I've already won a Grand Slam so I can take my time and put things in place because I know my motivation isn't any less."

"I'm quite proud of what I've achieved in the past 12 months. I'm not being so hard on myself, I'm really enjoying my time right now and also just really believing in the work I'm doing. I don't think anyone would say, 'I wish I didn't wish a Grand Slam at 18' because that is what I set out to do when I started playing tennis - and I did that."

"For that to happen very soon definitely comes with a lot of challenges but managing, learning and growing through the adversities that I have faced - I would much rather have that, learn from those experiences and keep building and progressing."
