Camila Giorgi has insisted she is not in any trouble after being accused of attempting to get a fake certificate to make it seem like she took one of the COVID-19 vaccines.
The ongoing Australian Open brings back memories of Novak Djokovic's controversial ordeal last year. Despite receiving a medical exemption after not taking a COVID-19 vaccine, he was eventually deported from Australia.
That followed a protracted saga that included several days in a detention center. Although last year's Australian Open was epic, what happened to Djokovic cast a shadow over the tournament.
Giorgi is the latest player to be embroiled in controversy related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 Canadian Open champion's family doctor accused her of asking for a fake certificate to trick others into believing she had received the vaccine.
That saga widened further when other members of Giorgi's family were accused of the same act. The doctor who made the claims says it was a coordinated family move to avoid taking the vaccine while avoiding any consequences that might have come with that decision.
It is important to note that the doctor's words have not been confirmed. Giorgi strongly defended herself when asked about the accusations, saying the doctor was in trouble with Italian law and was trying to distract from that.
"I'm not in danger. Not at all. She's in trouble, so I don't need to. I did everything what they ask, the Australia government. It's what I'm saying, I did just once vaccination with her, and the other ones I did with other doctors."
"So I'm fine, and she the one -- she's in trouble with the law in Italy. So after it's she's going to see. No, not at all, because I did vaccination with different places, and this need to be very clear because it's a big thing they say all around, and it's not my problem. It's her problem."— Giorgi further on the situation <br>
