Camila Giorgi is under investigation for allegedly lying about taking the COVID-19 vaccination by providing a fake certificate.
Giorgi's 2022 season was mixed. While not the worst of her career, it did not contain any exceptional highs like in 2021, when the Italian had one of the most unexpected runs of the season to seal the most significant title of her career at the Canadian Open.
Coco Gauff, nominated for this season's WTA Player of the Year award(ultimately won by Iga Swiatek), was among the players Giorgi defeated at the 2021 Canadian Open. She beat Karolina Pliskova in the final.
Giorgi did not reach any finals in 2022, although she did make the French Open fourth round for the first time. It seemed like the former Wimbledon quarterfinalist would mostly fly under the radar throughout 2022.
However, that is no longer the case. Giorgi has been accused of pretending she took the COVID-19 vaccination. Unless players have a medical exemption, taking one of the vaccines on offer is necessary to travel to some tournaments.
According to Yahoo Sports Australia, Giorgi's family doctor, Daniela Grillone, claimed that Giorgi asked her to give false documentation that could be used as evidence of taking the COVID-19 vaccine.
“The Giorgi family has been under treatment with me for a long time. Camila Giorgi suffered from the so-called tennis elbow. Shortly before the beginning of summer, she had come asking for the possibility of obtaining false proof of all the mandatory vaccines, as well as the Covid vaccine. I can confirm with absolute certainty that none of the vaccines against the Giorgi family have actually been administered."
That is a significant allegation. What happens next remains to be seen, but lying about information on medical records is considered a serious offense in many countries and can result in severe punishment.
