Garbine Muguruza's hopes of responding strongly to her disappointing 2022 season have been hit by three consecutive defeats, and the Spaniard admitted it is time to be humble about where she is at.

Since winning the 2021 WTA Finals, Muguruza has not been the same player. The Spaniard's blistering style of tennis was breathtaking and incredibly difficult to handle at its best, as shown by her track record.

Muguruza is a two-time Grand Slam champion. In the 2016 French Open final, she defeated Serena Williams, and in the 2017 Wimbledon final, she overcame Venus Williams. Beating two of the best WTA players ever shows how formidable she once was.

That made the 29-year-old's sudden decline in 2022 so surprising. The former WTA world No. 1 only won 12 matches throughout the year and lost 17, a shocking record for someone who has achieved so much in the sport.

Muguruza spoke during last season about needing to regain her confidence. Unfortunately, she started 2023 with two opening-round defeats at the Adelaide International 1 and the Adelaide International 2.

The former WTA Finals champion came close to securing her first win of the new season against Elise Mertens but eventually succumbed to a 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 loss to the multiple Grand Slam doubles champion.

The Spaniard is realistic about her performance over the last 12 months. She is willing to play in lower-level tournaments to regain her form and confidence.

"I will have to make a proper calendar with my ranking. I'll try to play the best tournaments too but when I can't I'll look at other lesser ones. I will value these type of tournaments. It's time to be humble."
I think it has been a mixture of tension and fatigue. Physically I have noticed a downturn. The truth is that the key moments are costing me. I start playing well and then maybe I don't show the highest level. It is necessary to be able to close these types of moments decisively.”
