Stan Wawrinka kicked off his Italian Open experience with a complaint about the event's transportation service.
The Swiss player didn't hesitate to voice his dissatisfaction on social media, causing a stir among tennis fans and prompting a debate about the quality of services provided by tournament organizers.
It comes just shortly after another ATP 1000 event, the Madrid Open, has been under fire for multiple reasons, including the alleged attempt to help Carlos Alcaraz, the birthday cake controversy, but also an incident that saw doubles finalists not having a chance to address the crowd during the trophy ceremony.
Now, players are moving from the Spanish capital to the capital city of Italy and Wawrinka's arrival in Rome for the Italian Open 2023 did not go as smoothly as he had hoped. The three-time Grand Slam champion has had a challenging start to his clay season, and eager to turn his season around at the Italian Open, Wawrinka was instead met with delays in transportation.
Frustrated by the situation, Wawrinka took to Twitter to express his dissatisfaction with the Italian Open organizers. Using the timer and sleepyhead emojis, he questioned the quality of the transportation service, writing:
"Is Italian Open the worst ATP Tour transportation service?"
This tweet quickly gained traction among tennis fans, sparking a heated debate about the responsibilities of tournament organizers in providing efficient transportation services to the players.
Some fans came to Wawrinka's defense, arguing that as a professional athlete participating in a prestigious event, he has the right to expect a timely and efficient transportation service. They pointed out that delays and disorganization can negatively impact an athlete's performance and overall experience at the tournament.
On the other hand, some critics accused Wawrinka of being ungrateful and overly demanding, considering the notorious traffic conditions in Rome. They argued that transportation delays are common in the Italian capital and suggested that the Swiss player should have been more understanding of the circumstances.
Hopefully, the Swiss player eventually made it to his hotel room and nothing will stop him from hitting the practice court and prepare for the last ATP 1000 event before the 2023 Roland Garros, an event where he won one of his three Grand Slam titles in the past.
