Taylor Fritz Withdraws From 2023 Sofia Open And Ends His Season

Taylor Fritz is calling time on his season a week early by pulling out of the Sofia Open, and it's not a huge surprise.

The only way Firtz would have played in Sofia was if he was still in contention for a spot at the ATP Finals. He had some minor chances before the Paris Masters, but they went up in smoke when he withdrew from the event.

An injury wasn't on his bingo card, yet it happened, leaving him without any chances to fight for a spot in Turin. It was a really disappointing development for Fritz because he actually played at the event last year.

He did really well actually, but he'll have to wait until next year to possibly play again. It's not been an entirely terrible season for Fritz, but there are a few things that are the difference between this and last year.

For example, he won more matches this year (55) compared to last year (49), but it just means he was a bit more consistent. Every week he played, Fritz won a couple of matches, which is good, but he didn't hit the peaks he hit last year.

He made it to two finals, winning both, but both were ATP 250 events. Compare that to last year, which saw him win three titles. He played in three finals and won all but the important thing is the category.

One was a Masters which gives you 1000 points, the other was a 250, and the last one was a ATP 500 so he earned 1750 points from those three trophies last year. This year's trophies earned him only 500 points, and that's why he's missing the Finals.

And it's also the reason he pulled out of Sofia because this late in the year, he can't change anything in terms of his qualification.
