WTA CEO Steve Simon has officially responded to a demand letter from leading WTA players calling for introduction of minimum of pay and better playing conditions.
Last month, at least 20 WTA players signed off a letter tabled to the WTA offices with a list of demands. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, together with fellow Grand Slam champions Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova led the revolt after a series of discussions culminating with a crunch meeting amongst players during the China Open.
While the expectation was that they would get written feedback from the WTA as indicated in the letter, with a deadline date of October 13, the WTA CEO Steve Simon chose a different approach to circumvent the concerns.
Instead, he called for a direct dialogue and instituted talks with the WTA leadership team and players - one of which took place at the WTA Finals in Cancun where the world's Top 8 players in singles and doubles have converged to win the final tournament of the season.
Following the meeting, the WTA head honcho wrote to the players about some of the issues which could not be covered during the meeting, while clarifying some of the issues discussed in the main agenda. That letter has since been leaked to Sports Illustrated and shared by their correspondent Jon Wertheim on X (formerly Twitter).
In the letter, Simon was empathetic about players' complaints regarding the staging of this year's WTA Finals so late in the season, whilst acknowledging that it was not a location players "expected", but stated that the decision was based "upon a number of complicated factors" and WTA "accepts" responsibility.
Simon also promised a radical change in the schedule, explaining that the 2024 calendar no longer carries the overlap of events. The main issue centered around minimum pay is a "topic scheduled for review" based upon the ATP's own initiative of the same which will be introduced next year.
