Taylor Fritz had a minor chance of making the ATP Finals before the Paris Masters, but it all went up in smoke when he withdrew from the event.
Fritz, of course, played at the ATP Finals last year and had a pretty big goal of playing there also this year. It won't be happening because he didn't earn enough points this year compared to last.
He has more wins this year compared to last, but he hasn't quite won as many events, which obviously contributed to him missing the event. He was in striking distance before the Paris Masters and had a decent chance as he played really well the previous year.
Unfortunately, he had to withdraw from the event due to an oblique injury that was too severe for him to play.
Playing on that injury would have likely caused more harm, which then would have put next year into question as we're not that far away from January. It's only two months away, and risking that was simply not worth it.
Devastated to have to pull out with so much on the line. All I wanted was the chance to fight for my potential Turin spot but after getting scans today on my oblique it’s just not possible for me to play. Time to rehab and hope to be back on court as soon as I can be.- Fritz on X
It's an unfortunate end for Fritz, but he proved himself to be among the best players once more. Now it's about taking the next step, which is becoming one of the really best players in the world and challenging for a Grand Slam.
He has the talent to do it, but we'll see if he'll be able to. Getting to a healthy start next year is crucial to that, so this withdrawal makes sense from that point of view.
