Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Dominic Thiem: 2023 Vienna Open - Preview & Prediction

by Evita Mueller

They were in action last week in Antwerp and did okay, so who will come out on top when Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem meet in the Austrian's backyard at the 2023 Vienna Open?

Stefanos Tsitsipas finally found some form in Antwerp, winning a couple of matches but still failing to make the final. The Greek player lost to Arthur Fils in the semi-final, which is not a good loss, to be honest, especially since he had chances in that one.

Thiem was no better, but he did win one match, which is good, I guess. We have to remember that this is 2023, Thiem. So what might happen? Well, it's been an eventful matchup so far with 11 matches, so plenty of things already happened.

Head-to-head:

Regarding this matchup, we already saw 11 matches between them, including two this year. There is a gap between their matches because, before these in 2023, the most recent one was in 2020, so essentially, we have to look at it separately.

Before 2023, Thiem led 5-4, which makes sense as he was the better layer at that time in their careers. That was before his injury. The two matches this year were both won by Tsitsipa, and that also makes sense as he's the better player right now.

Prediction:

With that in mind, it's important to note that we saw some really close matches between. Thiem is certainly capable of beating Tsitsipas in Vienna and for some reason, I do think that he will. Tsitsipas is vulnerable right now, and Thiem was amazing in Vienna last year.

I think he'll find that level again and produce an upset here because it's not a matchup that he struggles against. Even now, after the injury, Thiem is capable of it and I think he will.

Prediction: Dominic Thiem to win in two sets.
