Jannik Sinner is proving to be Novak Djokovic's nightmare as the Italian bested him in singles and doubles to send Italy to the 2023 Davis Cup final.
The Italian has been playing really strong tennis for a while now, winning a couple of big trophies in the final quarter of the year. He lost to Djokovic in the ATP Finals final but served him a really cold shower earlier today in the singles.
He bested him in three sets to give Italy a chance, though he needed to best him in the doubles once more. Well, he did, even though it didn't come easy. Sinner partnered with Lorenzo Sonego once more, while Djokovic partnered with Miomir Kecmanovic.
Djokovic and Kecmanovic played recently together, which basically meant they practiced ahead of the Davis Cup. That practice didn't matter as much because the Italians were on top in the opening set.
They served better, making things much easier for them compared to the Serbians. One break point was all they needed and from there they cruised to a 6-3 finish.
An early break in the second set was huge though the Serbian's weren't going to bow out easily. They broke back and then nearly broke once more, which would have been a huge momentum shifter.
It ended up being quite a huge moment as the Italians would break a bit later to take a 4-3 lead. From there, it wasn't an easy run to the finish line, but they got it done. The final score was 6-3 6-4 for the Italians as they secured the final against Australia.
It was a huge day for Sinner, who has been doing the heavy lifting since the start of the competition. Let's not forget to mention Lorenzo Sonego, who was pretty good in doubles twice as well. Djokovic's season is now officially over.
