Reilly Opelka struggles to see why doubles tennis players are paid as much as they did as he called them the most overpaid athletes in the world.
Opelka primarily plays singles, but he has also occasionally played doubles. He has previously performed well in them because of his serve and size, but he is not interested in playing them frequently. On Twitter, a fan asked him about it claiming that he might make big money there.
Opelka responded by bashing exactly that, pointing out that there is too much money in doubles tenins:
"Theres wayyy too much $$ in dubs," wrote Opelka in reply to the fan. He than added:
"Dubs players are the most overpaid athletes in the world."
Opelka's comments don't steam from a negative view of doubles tennis necessarily but more so on the fact that they earn way more money than they produce, as the interest in doubles tennis is very low unless a big name is playing.
He later added: "The best tennis players in the world rarely play doubles. Decreasing draw size in doubles would be a good place to start," Opelka wrote.
"People watch the best singles players play doubles! But they don't watch the best doubles players play doubles."
