The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated their rules for the International Travel Requirements and left Novak Djokovic disappointed.
The 21-time Grand Slam champion was awaiting good news from the CDC as it was reviewing it's rules for non-U.S. citizens. The only chance for Novak Djokovic to compete at the 2022 US Open would be if the Serbian would be allowed to enter the country without needing to be fully vaccinated.
On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that vaccination against COVID-19 is a requirement and also the tournament website already removed Novak Djokovic from its list of participants.
Although there is still no official statement by the Serbian, after the updated travel requirements, he is expected to announce his withdrawal shortly. Moreover, the US Open website hinted his withdrawal by removing the 21-time Grand Slam champion from the list.
Despite Novak Djokovic being one of the biggest favourites to win the title, his competitors would like to see the Serbian in New York as Daniil Medvedev previously stated in an interview: "I cannot do anything. It is the government that sets the rule, so I do not know if it can actually change or not. If you ask me, I mean If I would be the decision-maker, for sure I want Novak to play. I mean, I like when on the tournament there are the best players in the world. He just won a slam. This competition is super intense and super interesting. So I would love to see him there in New York."
