After Kostyuk's lambasting of the US Open for including Azarenka in the event, the Belarussian pulled out of the event.

Because of the involvement of Azarenka, whose nation fairly openly supports the War in Ukraine, both Marta Kostyuk and Lesia Tsurenko rejected their invitations for the event.

Azarenka personally spoke out against the War, but Kostyuk, who has been the most outspoken in criticizing her fellow colleagues for their positions and lack of action, was unconvinced despite the statement.

The backlash had the USTA release a statement before the event:

'"In the last 24 hours, after careful consideration and dialogue with all parties involved, Victoria Azarenka will not be participating in our "Tennis Plays for Peace Exhibition" this evening. Vika is a strong player and leader and we appreciate her willingness to participate. Given the sensitivities to Ukrainian players and the ongoing conflict, we believe this is the right course of action for us."

Last night, the event went on without her, and it was a big success because a lot of people came and saw the exhibitions. Fans witnessed a doubles match between Gauff and McEnroe against Nadal and Swiatek among other things.

It's unclear whether Azarenka withdrew or if the USTA stopped her from participating.
