Matteo Berrettini has ended the 2023 season early after struggling with multiple injuries this year, including an ankle injury more recently.
Berrettini suffered an ankle injury at the US Open, which left him unable to play for much of the past few weeks. The Italian held out hope that he could return by the end of the year, however, it didn't work out.
According to an update posted on Instagram, Berrettini trained hard in the past few weeks but he won't make a comeback. He was advised against it by his team, and he listened to the advice, wanting to start next year on the right path.
The update further stated that Berrettini hopes to have a much better year in 2024 while also offering his support to the Italian Davis Cup team in their quest to win the trophy.
Despite training at a high level for a few weeks my medical team has advised it would be a risk to compete in the final tournaments of the ATP season. It has been very difficult to accept this but I need to do what is best for next season and my long term career. I will take this opportunity to reset, re-build and start the year fully fit and healthy.
It has been an extremely tough year but I’m looking forward to a full and successful season in 2024. I will stay in close contact with the Davis Cup captain and make myself available to support team Italy in any way I can for the Finals. Your support has and continues to help me through some very tough times - thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
So, Berrettini won't appear on the court this year, as his comeback should come in 2024 somewhere Down Under. Hopefully, he comes back fully healthy and plays good tennis right away.
