Nick Kyrgios' chances of winning a Grand Slam were dashed on Tuesday night as Khachanov defeated him in the quarterfinals 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4.
After three hours and 39 minutes of play, the Russian finally won the match after breaking serve in the opening game of the fifth set and maintaining it the rest of the way.
"All credit to Karen. He’s a fighter. He’s a warrior. I thought he served really good today. Honestly (he is) probably the best server I played this tournament, the way he was hitting his spots under pressure" - said a dejected Kyrgios, struggling to come to terms with the defeat.
“I’m just devastated, obviously. (I) just feel like it was either winning it all or nothing at all. I feel like I’ve just failed at this event right now. That’s what it feels like…. Like, it’s heartbreaking — not just for me, but for everyone that I know that wants me to win.” - added Kyrgios.
Kyrgios could hardly even consider what his calendar may look like for the remainder of the year if there is one at all after the loss. It is a testament to how much tennis means to him right now:
“Honestly I don’t even really care about any other tournament. I feel like at the Grand Slams, now having success at a Grand Slam, it’s just like, no other tournament really matters" he said adding:
“I think pretty much every other tournament during the year is a waste of time really. You should just run up and show up at a Grand Slam. That’s what you’re remembered by.”
