A very bizarre situation transpired in Florida recently with the championship match of the Delray Beach Open between Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul rescheduled to Monday.
The Delray Beach Open is a longstanding ATP event played early in the tennis calendar every year. The field is generally dominated by US players, which was the case this year, and two of those were supposed to square off in the final on Sunday.
Representing the West Coast was Taylor Fritz, while Tommy Paul represented the East Coast. Unfortunately for tennis fans, the match was postponed to Monday, which is quite a bizarre situation and less than ideal for the players and the event.
Initially, the matches were only postponed, with the event announcing through social media that the matches were planned to be played on Sunday in spite of the delay.
"Sunday's matches are currently on schedule per Order of Play. Check DelrayBeachOpen.com for constant weather updates. Event will do its best to play the Singles & Doubles Finals on Sunday. If matches cannot be completed on Sunday, event will do its best to play matches on Monday (Sunday tickets will be valid for Monday)."
It was raining, and the initial forecasts were not promising. Rain was expected to last the entire day, and ultimately, after several hours, the event gave up and put out a new final update, notifying fans that the final would not be played on Sunday.
The final would be played on Monday, with the singles final set for 12:30 pm, which is quite early in the day. It's supposed to give the players a chance to get to the next event as quickly as possible if either opts to play next week.
Sometimes the weather simply doesn't cooperate, even when the tournament is played in Florida.
