Carlos Alcaraz had some problems with the tennis court in his final match at the 2024 Roland Garros, and he complained about it to the umpire Renaud Lichtenstein.
Alcaraz is the 2024 Roland Garros champion after beating Alexander Zverev in an insane five-set battle. The Spaniard overcame some leg issues, timing issues, and just not having the best day to beat a solid but rather tired Zverev.
It's the first time Alcaraz has won Roland Garros, and it is his third Grand Slam trophy overall. After lifting the trophy, the 21-year-old likely won't care one bit about anything else, because the job was done.
He came to Paris to win the trophy, and he'll be leaving with it. During the match, though, Alcaraz had many court issues, and it boiled over when he threw away the lead in the third set.
Alcaraz was up 5-2 and playing some really solid tennis when he simply crumbled out of nowhere, losing five games in a row to lose the set. As he was struggling on the court, the former world no. 1 complained to the umpire, Renaud Lichtenstein, that the courts were not on the standard they needed to be, calling it unbelievable.
"Do you think this is normal in a final of a Grand Slam? On a clay court? This is a hard court! It's unbelievable. Unbelievable!"
Even with the issues, Alcaraz could calm down and play his tennis, outplaying the German by a wide margin in the final two sets to win the match. It proves an impressive maturity for anybody, let alone a 21-year-old who is now 3-0 in Grand Slam finals.
That's the sort of player he is, but his complaining about it points to another issue. He wasn't the only player who complained about the tennis courts. Novak Djokovic also complained about the quality before he injured himself.
