Before the end of his career, Roger Federer spoke with nzz.ch and revealed how the last set of his last Grand Slam match felt like.
Roger Federer has delivered 94 bagels (winning a set 6-0) in total throughout his career. Some of them were even double bagels, like when the Swiss Maestro won 6-0, 6-0 against Mischa Zverev in the 2013 Halle Open quarterfinals. But the 20-time Grand Slam champion being bageled wasn't something that frequently occurred.
During five times in his extensive career did Federer lose a set 0-6; three of those times occurred in 1999, only his second season on the ATP Tour. Before ultimately losing the last set of his career to Hubert Hurkacz at Wimbledon, he had only been bageled once in 20 years.
"The last set against Hurkacz was one of the worst hours of my career," Federer revealed. "I realized that nothing works anymore. It's over. The disappointment felt like fireworks in my head. I didn't know how to proceed with this knee. At the press conference, nobody asked how the knee was doing. I thought: Hey, am I such a good actor that nobody noticed?"
"It was tough, the whole comeback was extremely difficult. I was so far from 100 percent. Reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon was unbelievable for me," Federer said.
