Carlos Alcaraz will not help Spain's Davis Cup team after he withdrew from the competition following his US Open loss.
In Rafael Nadal's absence, and with the injury troubles of Pablo Carreno Busta and Roberto Bautista Agut, the Spanish Davis Cup team had one man to rely on, the current world no. 1, Carlos Alcaraz.
After the draw for the group stage of the 2023 Davis Cup Finals was released, fans were looking forward to a potential clash between Novak Djokovic and the young Spaniard, and they were looking forward to the same clash also at the 2023 US Open.
Yet, the 20-year-old surprisingly lost in the semifinals of the last major of the season, so the showdown with the 23-time Grand Slam champion won't happen at Flushing Meadows, and it also won't happen in Valencia, Spain.
The group stages of the 2023 Davis Cup Finals are set to be held from September 12th to 17th in different locations and staged immediately after the US Open, many fans expected withdrawals to start accumulating.
On Thursday, Jannik Sinner announced that he won't compete at the event, and his fellow compatriot Matteo Berrettini also pulled out, and now, Carlos Alcaraz joins this list of high-profile players withdrawing from the 2023 Davis Cup Finals.
Spain is set to play their first tie in front of the home crowd in Valencia against the Czech Republic on September 13th, then play against Serbia on September 15th, and finishing the group stage with a tie against Republic of Korea, on September 17th.
Now, Spain will need to rely on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Roberto Bautista Agut, Marcel Granollers, and also Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who replaces the two-time Grand Slam champion in the line-up.
After his loss at the 2023 US Open, Alcaraz said that he doesn't want to think about it for a very long time, and maybe he'll use the time during his Davis Cup absence to recover and prepare for the last part of the season.
"I don't know. Probably days, weeks. I don't know. I don't think I'm gonna think about this loss for a long time. Of course I have to learn about it. I want to be better. You know, these kind of matches help you a lot to be better and grow up in these kind of situations."
"But I have to talk with my team, with Juan Carlos, and how I can be better, but days, weeks, but not much longer than that."
