World number one Carlos Alcaraz has made the decision to skip the hard-court season as he begins preparing for the clay-court season.
The young Spanish tennis star withdrew from the 2023 Australian Open due to an injury, and has decided to focus on the 2023 Argentina Open in Buenos Aires, which will be played on clay. It will also be his first tournament in the 2023 season.
Alcaraz's record on hard courts last year was impressive, with a 26-7 record, but his record on clay is even better, with a 27-4 record. Out of the five titles he has won last year, three were on clay and two were on hard courts. This decision to skip the hard-court season and focus on clay is a strategic move for the young player, as his strengths lie on this surface.
The decision to skip the hard-court season may be a risky one for Alcaraz, as many of the top players in the world excel on hard courts. However, his focus on clay courts could pay off in the long run, as the clay court season includes some of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, such as the Madrid Open, Rome Masters, Monte-Carlo Masters, and the Roland Garros.
He will be joined by some of the top names in Argentina as Dominic Thiem, Cameron Norrie and Diego Schwartzman all signed up for the event in Buenos Aires.
