Felix Auger-Aliassime took some time away from the tennis courts since reaching the fourth round of the first major of the season, but he's back with a bang.
The 22-year-old took on Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the 2023 Rotterdam Open, as both players were looking to meet qualifier Gregoire Barrere in the next round, thinking about high chances of making it to the quarterfinals.
The Italian had a bad start to the season, and it continued also in Rotterdam. However, he lost to very tricky opponents, as this year, Sonego was beaten by Daniil Medvedev, Jack Draper, Hubert Hurkacz, and Jannik Sinner.
Auger-Aliassime didn't give his opponent any time to find the lost form and started the first set with a superb performance, breaking his opponent two times and hitting 6 aces to avoid any drama on his serve. After 36 minutes, the Canadian led 1-0 and looked to win the match in two.
At the start of the second set, Auger-Aliassime had to face two break points. But after saving those, it was a cruise for the world no. 8 once again, as he added 7 more aces to win the match 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 24 minutes.
