Felix Auger-Aliassime made sure that Canada and Italy will need to play the last doubles match in their semifinal tie at the 2022 Davis Cup Finals.
In Canada's quarterfinal tie against Germany, it was Felix Auger-Aliassime, who needed to win after his compatriot Denis Shapovalov lost the first singles match. In the semifinals against Italy, the situation was very similar as his compatriot lost a gruelling battle in three sets.
“Huge credit to Felix for bringing the team on the board,” Shapovalov said after winning against Germany. "He saved us out there today. It’s always a pleasure to play with Vasek. It’s always awesome to share the court with him and we bring some firepower."
Aware of what he needs to do, the Canadian was superb in the first set. He hit 6 aces and added seven more winners to dominate and win 6-3.
Auger-Aliassime continued at the same pace also in the second set. He hit another 6 aces and added 11 more winners to get one more break, while never facing breakpoints and win the match 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 26 minutes.
Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini will team up for Italy in doubles and they will take on Vasek Pospisil and Denis Shapovalov unless a change is made.
