The prize money and points distribution has been revealed for the 2024 Shanghai Masters, running from October 2nd to 13th.
The Shanghai Masters is the penultimate ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the year. It was first played in 2009, when Nikolay Davydenko shocked Rafael Nadal in the final, triumphing 7-6, 6-3.
Tennis legends Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray have all won the event on more than one occasion. Djokovic is the most successful player in the tournament's history, claiming four titles.
The Shanghai Masters was not played from 2020 until 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the event returned last year, Hubert Hurkacz had a surprising run to the title, beating Andrey Rublev in the final.
Unsurprisingly, the Masters-1000 tournament has a superb entry list. US Open champion Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Djokovic, who played in the Davis Cup for Serbia, are some of the biggest names set to feature in Shanghai.
The players will fight for their share of an eye-watering $8,995,555 that will be distributed in prize money, with the winner receiving the most significant chunk of that considerable amount.
A monumental $1,100,000 will be given to the winner of the 2024 Shanghai Masters, as well as 1000 ranking points. All Masters-1000 tournaments handsomely reward the champions, but $1,100,000 is a particularly notable sum of money on offer.
The 2024 Shanghai Masters runner-up's reward is also exceptional. That player will receive $585,000 in prize money and 650 ranking points. Both Shanghai finalists are thoroughly compensated for their efforts.
Several entertaining players outside the Top 10 on the entry list could significantly improve their ranking by reaching the semifinals or quarterfinals. Ben Shelton, Lorenzo Musetti, and Felix Auger-Aliassime are relevant examples.
The two losing semifinalists at the Shanghai Masters will receive 400 ranking points and $325,000 for their run to that stage. 400 ranking points would be enough for some players to break into the Top 10.
Making the quarterfinals of a Masters-1000 event is also an impressive achievement. The four players who exit at that stage will earn $185,000 and 200 points to help their ranking.
The six-figure sum received by players who lose in the fourth round demonstrates how impressive the prize money is at the 2024 Shanghai Masters. ATP stars who fall in the fourth round will be given $101,000 and 100 points.
Any victory at a Masters-1000 tournament is pivotal to lower-ranked players in the draw. Those who make the third round will receive 50 points and $59,100, while those who exit in the second round will receive 30 points and $34,500.
Unlike ATP 250 and 500 events, which do not award ranking points to players who lose in the first round, 10 points are given to first-round losers at Masters-1000 tournaments. They will also receive $23,350 at the 2024 Shanghai Masters.
