Team Britain's chances of winning the Billie Jean King Cup have been boosted after Emma Raducanu's involvement in November's finals was confirmed.
Raducanu has endured an indifferent season since returning to tennis at the start of 2024 after nine months out with severe wrist and ankle injuries that required surgery. She has also been criticized for some of her scheduling decisions.
The 2021 US Open champion could not repeat her previous heroics at Flushing Meadows at this year's US Open. In the first round, she lost in three sets to Sofia Kenin, the former 2020 Australian Open winner.
Raducanu came under fire for her decision not to play in the Canadian or Cincinnati Open qualifying ahead of the US Open. She had not played a match in over three weeks before her defeat against Kenin in New York.
Andy Roddick was one of those who spoke out against the 21-year-old's decision. The 2003 US Open champion said Raducanu does herself no favors with some of her scheduling decisions.
Former world No. 1 Kim Clijsters also warned Raducanu about making misguided decisions with her team. The Briton is known for changing her coach frequently despite being just 21, and some think that has harmed her development.
Some might have expected Raducanu to skip the Billie Jean King Cup Finals after playing so little before the US Open. Playing at a tournament in November and having less time to prepare for 2025 may have been viewed as an inconvenience.
Raducanu's injury history is another justification she could have used for skipping the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. After her previous physical issues, competing so late into the season might have been considered dangerous for the Briton.
Raducanu ignored those concerns and chose to represent her country at the team event. The Billie Jean King Cup Finals will be held from November 13th to 20th in Malaga.
Raducanu may have been influenced by how exceptionally she played in her last appearance at the Billie Jean King Cup in April. Team Britain was a heavy underdog away from home on clay against France.
But the home favorites were left stunned when Britain triumphed 3-1. Raducanu was the star, recording outstanding victories against Caroline Garcia and Diane Parry on what many consider her weakest surface.
The 21-year-old's struggles at other stages of the season have been evident. However, her performances against France could indicate that the former US Open champion becomes inspired when representing her country.
There are four other members of Britain's team for November: Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart, Heather Watson, and Olivia Nicholls. That is a strong lineup that could do damage on the hardcourts in Malaga.
Boulter has enjoyed the best season of her career. She won her first WTA 500 title at the San Diego Open, recovering from losing the first set in the final against Marta Kostyuk. Boulter also retained her title at the Nottingham Open, beating Raducanu in the semifinal.
Dart showed her ability by stunning Boulter in the second round of Wimbledon 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 after an epic battle. Raducanu may be the most high-profile name, but there is a wide range of talent in Team Britain's ranks.
