The 2024 Bastad Open is the most anticipated ATP 250 event of the season, and the entry list has been revealed.
Held during the brief post-Wimbledon clay-court swing, this year's Bastad Open will run from July 15th to 21st. Because it will be played on clay, it will serve as the perfect warm-up tournament for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be held at Stade Roland Garros.
An indication that this year's tournament has whet the appetite of tennis fans is the large number of world-class ATP players committing to play. Chief among them is 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, who has accepted a wild card from the tournament organizers.
It will be his first trip to Bastad in 19 years. The last time he was there, he won the event, beating the now-retired Tomas Berdych in the final. Having chosen to skip Wimbledon, Nadal is clearly targeting a fruitful summer in Paris, where he will play singles and doubles at the Olympics.
Joining him in the Swedish city is World No. 1, Jannik Sinner. The Italian's decision to return to clay courts aligns with his ambition to win a medal for his country. Sinner has already achieved a number of firsts this year, including winning a Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
So, a preparatory tournament on clay before the Olympics suggests he wants to go for glory in Paris in late July. Last year, Andrey Rublev defeated 2021 champion Casper Ruud for the title. Both men will return to compete for the prize in Bastad in 2024.
Mariano Navone is having a dream season on tour. He's reached three finals already, two of them on the ATP Tour (Rio and Bucharest). He's up to a career-high ranking of World No. 29. He will be a dangerous floater in the draw.
Cameron Norrie lost his spot as British No. 1. He can quickly look to regain that mantle in Bastad and will be among the seeds. Roman Safiullin and Pavel Kotov are two of the Top 50 players who have signed up to play in this tournament.
Kei Nishikori will play using a protected ranking. He's confirmed as Japan's only representative in the men's singles tournament at the Olympics. The Bastad Open organizers will name two more wild cards before the tournament begins. The initial entry list can be accessed below.
