Daniil Medvedev lifted ATP 1000 title in Paris two years ago and last year, he played final at the Paris Masters.

However, in 2022, the Russian lost already in the first round as he took on inspired Alex de Minaur. Daniil Medvedev was coming to the French capital after his triumph in Vienna, where he defeated Denis Shapovalov in the final.

Following the final match, he showed his excitement about playing indoors and wanted to finish the season strong at the last two events, when he said: “I like to play indoor hard courts at the end of the season,” Medvedev said. “I feel that I do a great job with my team not to arrive burnt out. I am looking forward to the last two tournaments of the year which are really important and I usually play well.”

That can still happen, but not at the 2022 Paris Masters. Alex de Minaur defeated Sebastian Korda in the first round and he started well also in the second against former world no. 1. The Australian had three break points already in the second game, but couldn't use any of his chances.

After both players showed their serving qualities, it seemed that the first set will have to be decided in a tie-break. But that's not something De Minaur wanted to do as he built another two break point chances and didn't miss this time.

After winning the first set 6-4, the Australian had a really slow start in the second. Moreover, Medvedev dominated the set by having a total of 9 break points. He used two of those and levelled score of the match by winning the second set 6-2.

It seemed that the match will turn into a one-man show when Medvedev started the third set with yet another break. However, De Minaur managed to fight back and after two hours and 47 minutes, he caused the biggest upset of the tournament so far by winning 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
