Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek have been confirmed as the top seeds at the 2023 Wimbledon, leading 32-player fields.
The former player and former Australian Open CEO Paul McNamee explained earlier this week why Djokovic not being the top seed is a bad look for the event. McNamee agreed that technically being the top or second seed doesn't mean much in terms of the draw but with last year's points, Djokovic would have been the top seed easily this year according to the Australian.
It's true he would have been, and things would have been very different for many players. Rybakina famously said last year that her Wimbledon triumph didn't feel like a Grand Slam win as she didn't get the 2000 points that go along with it. In any case, Alcaraz is the top seed having returned to world number one following his Queen's Club win.
The Spaniard would like to change the dominance of Djokovic at Wimbledon but he understands that it will be tough. Dealing with some apparent muscle issues days before the event is set to begin certainly won't make many fans feel that great about it his proclamation.
In terms of the rest of the field, Novak Djokovic sits at number two, Daniil Medvedev follows at number 3, and 'grass for golfers' campaigner Casper Ruud comes in at number four. Stefanos Tsitsipas holds 5, Holger Rune sits at 6, Andrey Rublev at 7, and Jannik Sinner at 8. When it comes to the women, the top seed is Iga Swiatek who might lose her number-one rank after this event.
Aryna Sabalenka is in striking distance and a deep run to the final or even the trophy would prove enough to get it done. As the number two seed it certainly wouldn't shock too many people. Defending champion Elena Rybakina sits at number three. The rest of the top seeds are Jessica Pegula at 4, Caroline Garcia at 5, Ons Jabeur at 6, Coco Gauff at 7, and Maria Sakkari at 8.
