Carlos Alcaraz won't be competing at the 2023 Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic as he withdrew from the tournament.
With only one grass-court ATP event in his schedule, the 20-year-old Spaniard signed up also for an exhibition tournament at the Hurlingham Club. However, after he won at the Queen's Club, Alcaraz made the decision to abandon his initial plans.
The World No. 1 was supposed to take on Holger Rune on Wednesday, and he was set to play against Dominic Thiem on Friday. However, Alcaraz changed his plans and withdrew from the tournament, even though an injury should not be the problem.
In the final match against Alex de Minaur at the 2023 Cinch Championships, Alcaraz had to have his thigh wrapped, but he dismissed any injury concerns after the match. It seems that the Spaniard will now want to focus on the third major of the season.
Earlier this year, the 20-year-old was forced to miss the Australian Open, and after he was stopped by cramps at the Roland Garros, Alcaraz simply refuses to give up his Grand Slam chances once again because of an injury.
Five matches at the Queen's Club were certainly enough for the top seed to gather a lot of confidence for Wimbledon, where he will be the first non-Big Four top seed since 2003. Last year, Alcaraz reached the fourth round in the All England Club, before falling to Jannik Sinner in four sets.
The Italian later proved to be a major challenge even for a seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, and it will be Alcaraz who will want to stop the Serbian from winning his eighth and tying Roger Federer in 2023. After the final at the Queen's Club, the 20-year-old acknowledged that he has a lot of weapons, and he'll be ready to use them.
"Yeah. I mean, I see myself with a lot of weapons, you know, on grass. I try to hit big shots all the time, you know. I think I improve my serve really well. You know, with the forehand, you know, I try to dominate all the time."
