Novak Djokovic is the defending champion at Wimbledon but he won't be the top seed as that will go to Carlos Alcaraz.
For a very long time, Wimbledon had a specific system of awarding seeding spots which included how players performed on grass in the past. It created situations like the ones when a player not ranked number one on the ATP Rankings was the top seed of Wimbledon confusing many casuals.
In 2021, Wimbledon opted to use the ATP Rankings officially to determine the seeds at the event which made the process a lot easier to understand. Due to that though, Novak Djokovic won't be a top seed at this year's event despite being the defending champion.
Alcaraz's triumph at the Queen's Club event ensured that the Spaniard moved ahead of Djokovic in the latest rankings which also ensured that he will be the top seed at the event. It's not something that matters much to many however former player Paul McNamee doesn't think it's a very good look.
Pundits point out no difference in being seeded 1 or 2. Technically, that's true. But ask any player if they like to see their name at the top of the draw? Due to the aberration of not awarding points last year, Djokovic will not head the Wimbledon men’s draw. For me, not a good look.
There is certainly something to be said about last year's fiasco when the event didn't award any points. Plenty of players spoke out against that as Elena Rybakina famously said that she didn't feel like a champion without the points.
Some players saw their career impacted heavily with significant drops in the rankings after the event while some never jumped up despite scoring a big result that year. Perceptually there is also the fact that the reigning Australian Open and French Open champion isn't the top seed at the 3rd Grand Slam this year. Odd? Yes? Will many care? Not really.
