'We're Not Getting Married': Swiatek Explains Reasons Behind Red Dress At WTA Finals

Iga Swiatek caught all the attention during the gala before the 2023 WTA Finals with her choice of dress that stuck out.

Every time there's a gala event before the WTA Finals, where players pose with the trophy and dress up nicely. It's a nice switch-up from all the sports gear that they generally have on.

Most fans also don't get to see the players in such a glamorous setting often. This year, one thing about the gala stuck out, and that was the dress choice of Iga Swiatek. She picked a bright red dress that stuck out among the shades of white dresses the rest of the players had.

It became a story, though she doesn't really understand why. During the press conference after her first win, the Polish player explained what happened.

Honestly there was no story. I picked the dress a couple months before. Then WTA emailed us that we should all wear white. We were like ‘really?’ We’re not getting married or something. We asked them if it’s possible to maybe not have that rule. They sent an email a couple of hours later & said ‘it’s okay, you can kind of wear whatever you want.

I think most of the girls maybe thought the rule was so on or something. But I’m not sure. I think it was a full coincidence because the day before, we asked what everyone is going to wear. They told us four girls are gonna wear white.

Swiatek isn't a player particularly known for fashion, but she enjoys it. The dress was one of her choosing as she immediately liked it.

I didn’t want to make a big fuss about my dress or anything. I’m happy I picked this one. It’s from a Polish fashion designer. I loved it from the first time I saw it. It’s also a little bit of a Mexican vibe with the red. I think it was a nice choice. It was the first time I wore something that was so slim.”
